Reviews of the Soundtrack to Deadly Embrace Sister Noëlla (the Cheese Nun).....It’s gorgeous! Jocko Marcellino (Sha Na Na)…..Beautiful music George Stelluto (The Juilliard School)……This is excellent Annual Bach festival tosses in a little tango PEORIA – Along with pieces you might expect on such a concert series – the Brandenburg Concertos No.3 and No. 5, the Easter Oratorio – this year’s Peoria Bach Festival will feature a new twist of sorts. Namely, Bach and Tango. The Urbana-based group Tango Espejo will present a Bach-meets-tango chamber music program at 5:30pm. Thursday at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 135 NE Randolph Ave. The group specializes in the music of Argentinean tango composer Astor Piazzolla. Tango Espejo (the name means “tango mirror”) grew out of a doctoral dissertation by Garold Fowler, a [former] student at the University of Illinois and a double bass player with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra. “Piazzolla was highly influenced by Bach,” said Garold Fowler. “Piazzolla was probably one of the very first tango genre composers who did a tango fugue. Piazzolla throughout his career made it known that he was influenced by Bach.” Piazzolla’s best-know piece is probably “the Four Seasons of Buenos Aires,” inspired by Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons.” Most audiences, though, hear orchestrations of Piazzolla’s work. Fowler, however, has created Piazzolla’s original instrumentation. Besides Fowler on double bass the group consists of Brian Gehrich (violin), Lara Driscoll (piano), Jonathan Kotulski (accordion/bandoneónist) and George Turner (electric guitar). Tango Espejo frequently can be heard at concerts and recitals, including monthly gigs at V. Picasso in Urbana. During the Thursday Bach Festival concert, Fowler and Tango Espejo will talk about Bach influenced Piazzolla as well as performing selections from “Suite del Angel” as well as from “Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.” – Gary Panetta, Peoria Journal Star, Peoria, IL (June 05, 2011)
